When Novelty Wears Off

Updated: Jul 24

Like everyone else, we had to adapt to do things completely different from the beginning of lockdown. From home schooling, work, church, lifestyle to daily routines, it started off with good spirits and discipline but 5 months later, the novelty wears off and we start to look for new joy which is futile when we are looking at the wrong places. Someone whom we are temporarily caring for constantly says "no one has the answers to my problems". No, no human does. Can't help but it triggered the kairos moment to reflect.

When it feels like nothing has changed,

When it feels like there isn't progress,

When it feels like we are so slow or behind,

When it feels like there's no growth,

No matter how hard we try.

When it feels like we've been taken for granted,

When it feels like we are a subject for comparisons,

When it feels like we are constantly being judged,

When it feels like we are good for nothing or never good enough,

When it feels like we are the centre of a laughingstock,

When it feels like we have no gifts nor talents,

When it feels like we have nothing exciting to share,

When it feels like there's no end in waiting,

When it feels like we've been cast aside or forgotten,

When it feels like all goodness have disappeared,

When it feels like there's no hope,

When we feel so lost,

When we feel our hearts have been pierced with a sword,

That's when I've been reminded of this Lamentations 3:22-23,

"Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed,

For his compassion never fail,

They are new every morning, great is your faithfulness."

We are not consumed by weariness,

We are not consumed by tiredness,

We are not consumed by insults,

We are not consumed by sufferings,

We are not consumed by afflictions,

We are not consumed by injustice,

We are not consumed by darkness,

We are not consumed by fear,

We are not consumed by condemnations,

But even when we face all the above, we still have the Lord's compassion.

We are not consumed by self exaltation,

We are not consumed by impatience,

We are not consumed by noise nor silence,

We are not consumed by pride and selfishness,

We are not consumed by entitlement,

We are not consumed by prosperity,

We are not consumed by anger,

We are not consumed by unforgiveness,

We are not consumed by self-pity,

We are not consumed by bitter memories,

We are not consumed by worldliness,

We are not consumed by mundane routines and repetitions like robots.

Because we are humans,

Because we are fearfully and wonderfully made,

Because we are children of God,

Because He longs for us to know His goodness everyday,

If only we choose to find joy in Him as opposed to joy in the world,

Because His joy never changes,

Because His joy never ceases,

Because His joy satisfies our soul,

That we may not be hungry again,

Because His joy is eternal and everlasting,

Because only He is the way, the truth and the life,

Who gives us new hope every morning,

And he further promises,

"My (future) grace is sufficient for you,

For my strength is made perfect in weaknesses".
